The Chincoteague pony is a breed of horse that lives on Assateague Island in Virginia and Maryland as one of the many breeds of feral horses in the United States. The breed was made famous by the Misty of Chincoteague series of novels written by Marguerite Henry starting in 1947. Chincoteagues are able to adapt to their environment and survive, growing thicker coats to keep them warm in the winter months.
